A place of history, the Woodford Reserve Distillery sits in the Woodford County of Kentucky. This bluegrass region of blue-flowered poa grass interspersed with giant oak trees is the setting of thoroughbred farms. Home to the Woodford Reserve Distillery, it is a charming place to be. A full-bodied bourbon from Kentucky, Woodford Reserve is delicious and rich. It is a brand of premium small batch Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey.
Legacy is a Living Thing
The Woodford Reserve Distillery is a National Historic Landmark and here is the reason why. Whiskey-crafting was first started here, some eight miles away from the town of Versailles in Kentucky in 1812 by Elijah Pepper. The Woodford Reserve Distillery was formerly known as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery, named after Elijah Pepper’s son. Sitting on the site of Kentucky’s oldest distillery, the Woodford Reserve Distillery is the oldest and smallest distillery of Kentucky. Under the able guidance of Master Distiller James Christopher Crow, the whiskey-making methods were fine-tuned and perfected here. The Pepper family sold the distillery to Labrot and Graham in 1878. Briefly unoperational during the period of Prohibition, the property changed hands again in 1941 and was sold to the Brown-Forman Corporation.
Reserve the Best for Woodford Reserve
The distillery boasts of iconic copper pot stills and hundred-year-old cypress wood fermenters. It is also home to the only heat-recycled barrel-houses in the world. This affects the flavour and colour of the finished product as the noble liquid seeps into the charred white oak barrels. Master Distiller James Christopher Crow who worked here in the 19th century had improved the whiskey-making process by introducing sour mash into fermentation. Material from an older batch of mash was used to start the fermentation of the next batch. Yeast propagation, pot still distillation and barrel maturation only added to the complexity and smoothness of flavour. It is triple distilled for the same purpose, for added smoothness.
The flavour of the Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is beautifully balanced. There are more than two hundred flavour notes in it, all perfectly detectable. Pair it with dark chocolate, toasted hazelnut, aged parmesan, orange slice, sorghum or dried cranberry to experience the full range of its flavours on your palate. From sweet aromatics like vanilla, maple syrup, caramel and butterscotch to spices like cinnamon, clove and black pepper, fruity flavours like rose petals, honeysuckle, apricot and cherry to the woody/nutty flavours of almond, pecan, hazelnut, walnut, and cedar - the flavour memories created are personal and plenty. Malt and rye form the backbone of the Woodford Reserve. The subtle notes of the other flavours play on that structure. This bourbon serves as the basis for many a cocktails and is also served as a digestif after dinner.
Whether you have it on the rocks or build a cocktail with it, the Woodford Reserve Bourbon is delicious. The Kentucky Rye Whiskey carries the pronounced spice notes of pepper and tobacco. For a sweet oaky flavour, settle for the Double Oaked. This twice-barreled bourbon is matured in separate charred barrels, both built of oak. The second barrel is toasted to impart added flavour. The Woodford Reserve Distillery ’s Master Collection is a fine collection of unique whiskies. Using the handcrafted methods of Pepper and Crow, it is a tribute to the legacy of the Woodford Reserve Distillery.

That summer afternoon it was raining and the wind whistled away to glory, the rain-washed courtyard half-filled with leaves conspired to take you away from your curriculum books for a while. A sip of coffee by the window while holding a best-seller seemed like the best way to spend the lazy, beautiful afternoon. As you transcended to the next phase – ‘the corporate’, a dram of whiskey quite seamlessly took over the coffee and novel. The rain gave you just the reason you were looking for, to hold the glass and forget the laptop for a while.

Now it would be unwise to discard something that you have cherished with all your heart but for the creatively inclined whiskey drinker, upcycling a bottle of whiskey can help you make it a part of your home forever.
